Brougham Hall Reverend Wilfred Braithwaite MA Wilfred had lived at Brougham Lodge since retiring as Vicar of Lanercost Priory 17 years ago. He was a very saintly and loveable man who was many things to many people. To us at the Hall, we
regarded him as an Honary Chaplain because he performed so many blessings, weddings and christenings associated with the Hall that he seemed to be very much part of the local scene. Wilfred was a specialist in the Westmorland dialect. Wilfred was a "friend of Brougham" and he his wife, Connie, contributed financially to the restoration of the Hall. He married Christopher and Alison Terry in July 1989, christened both their children, blessed the War Memorial in 1992 and Alice’s Wonderland in July 1997. Don Mawdsley
Don died, on Saturday 26th July, shortly before his 80th birthday, after a very short illness. For 17 years, he and his wife Yolanda had lived at Brougham House and taken an interest in Brougham Hall. In recent years, Don had made himself absolutely invaluable as a self appointed clerk of works for our restoration project. His cheerful nature and wise advice will be sadly missed. A number of Dons' family are closely associated with the Hall. A Don Mawdsley Memorial Fund has been established with the intention of restoring the C 16th Postern Gate. George Smailes George died on Saturday 26th April, at the age of 77, after enduring years of ill health. George looked after the interests of Brougham Hall at various times between 1993 and 1996 when the Hall team was working on the restoration of Parson Lodge Battery in Gibraltar. Janet Miller Terry 1944 - 2003 Janet died peacefully, in her sleep, on Sunday 25th May 2003, after a short illness. She was the inspiration behind the saving of Brougham Hall. She was the cause of the Terry’s being in Cumbria, in March 1968 she chose the route. She found Brougham
Hall and she wrote all the initial letters to ensure its ultimate salvation. These letters still exist. |
